Instant Ways to Calm Yourself...
This is a great article that I found from Everyday Health's website. As I find helpful articles about panic attacks, I will post them here.
Quick Steps to take in the midst of a Panic Attack - (Even while you're driving)
* Remember, I'm not a medical expert, this is what helped me so I'm sharing them with you *
1. Close your eyes (unless you're driving) and breathe deeply ( if you're driving and feel that you need to pull over, pull over and follow steps)
2. Place your hands flat on the table, desk, steering wheel or your knees - whatever firm surface is in front of you at this time - and take another deep breathe
3. Try your best to ignore the the negative thoughts in your head right now
4. Speak out loud, Jesus! It's one word and it has the power to calm your mind immediately, say it as many times as it takes for you to get calm .
5. Breathe Deeply, inhale deeply and slowly exhale - it may take a few times but that's okay, keep doing it until your body responds by becoming calmer, I know we hate to be told this, but try to relax as much as you can in this moment
6. Now, Focus on what task you need to do, while speaking possible words out loud, such as, I can do all things through Christ, I can do this, God's got me, Jesus is Lord, etc. (These words work for me but say whatever word or phrase that makes you feel calm and more confident in this moment...for some people its a sound, like humming for example.)
7. Now remind yourself that this is only a moment and this moment will pass, GOD's got you... YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS
8. Pray a simple prayer - "God help me"
Believe me, I know sometimes in the midst of a panic attack, you can't think clearly enough to remember some step by step process, so the key is to review and memorize these steps when you're having a "good" day in order to prepare yourself in case you do have one. Keep in mind, that our goal is to get you to a place where, you don't need any steps, the place of freedom! However, while on our journey to freedom, this will help.
